Baltimore Child Abuse Center’s mission is to provide all reported victims of child sexual abuse in Baltimore, and their non-offending caretakers, with comprehensive interviews, medical treatment, referrals and crisis counseling services, with a goal of preventing future sexual child abuse.

Founded in 1987, Baltimore Child Abuse Center (BCAC) opened in response to growing awareness that sexually abused children were not only suffering the lasting effects of the endured acts that had been done to them, but they were also being re-victimized by the lengthy and often repetitive investigative process intended to help them. BCAC has since developed a coordinated response that has resulted in timely, child-sensitive investigations of child sexual abuse in Baltimore City. BCAC partners with Baltimore City Police, Child Protective Services and the State’s Attorney’s Office.

In addition to responding to child sexual abuse, BCAC has taken a grassroots approach in the Baltimore community to preventing future abuse in Baltimore. BCAC offers prevention workshops to teachers, health professionals, parents, and interested community members focusing on recognizing signs of abuse, keeping children safe, and reporting abuse. BCAC also works with children in school settings to teach them about healthy boundaries and personal safety in age-appropriate lessons.

Baltimore Child Abuse Center is governed by a lay Board of Directors, employs 20 full-time professionals, and relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors to fulfill its mission.
